Professor Stuart Bevan Stuart Bevan received his BSc from University College London (UCL) and his PhD in Physiology based on his studies with Nobel Laureate, Sir Bernard Katz in the Department of Biophysics at UCL. After post-doctoral Fellowships at the Salk Institute, California, the Stazione Zoologica, Naples and the Physiological Laboratory, Cambridge, he returned to UCL as a tenured faculty member. In 1985 he joined the Sandoz Institute for Medical Research first as a Laboratory Head and then as Head of Biology. Following the merger of Sandoz and Ciba-Geigy in 1997, he was appointed Head of the Pain Unit and Director of the renamed Novartis Institute for Medical Sciences. Here he was responsible for the scientific direction of pain research and the management of the Institute, taking 7 compounds into clinical trials. He has published over 70 full papers, many investigating cellular and pharmacological aspects of nociception. In addition, he has contributed chapters to pain monographs and books, including the Textbook of Pain. His scientific contributions to pain research and pharmacology were recognized by the conferral of the titles of Professor of Pharmacology at UCL in 1997 and Novartis Leading Scientist in 2004. In Oct 2005 he moved to the Wolfson Centre for Age-Related Diseases at King’s College London as Professor of Pharmacology where he leads a research group investigating the mechanisms of sensory transduction, pain and analgesia. |
